COVID-19 Disproportionate Impact on Minority Populations: An Update (On-Demand Webinar)

Overview: In a webinar last January, we discussed potential reasons why COVID-19 had a disproportionate impact on minority populations. Since then—despite vaccines, boosters, and more public health knowledge—CDC data continues to show that racial and ethnic minority groups continue to be at higher risk of getting sick and dying from COVID-19. This webinar will discuss policy changes that stakeholders have implemented in an attempt to address this disproportionate impact, sometimes to little effect, and will further explore causes for the disparities, including social determinants of health, vaccine hesitancy, and racial inequity. We will also discuss the legal history of vaccine trials, the utility of vaccine mandates to address health disparities, and the effect that vaccine mandates have had on minority populations. Finally, we will address how regulatory flexibilities around telehealth have provided opportunities to bridge access gaps that have contributed to health disparities and how a tightening of such flexibilities after the close of the public health emergency could affect such opportunities.
