Overview: The American Psychological Association’s (APA’s) recent Health Advisory on the Use of Generative AI Chatbots and Wellness Applications for Mental Health observes that while millions of people are engaging with chatbots and wellness apps to address their mental health needs, even those technologies that are developed specifically to address mental health concerns lack scientific validation, adequate safety protocols, and regulatory approval. The absence of robust guardrails to ensure the efficacy and safety of these digital tools requires that health care organizations carefully examine the risks and ethical considerations surrounding their use, as well as comply with applicable law.
